1988 CORVETTE - How it all got started!
The 1988 Corvette production marked the Corvette’s 35th anniversary year and the continued evolution of the famous car. In addition to other options and colors, engine and body upgrades were introduced and included modified cylinder heads and a reworked camshaft that boosted the formidable L98 an additional five horses, up to a total of 245 bhp (check out the 1988 Corvette Specifications page). Z51 and Z52 suspension packages included 17-inch wheels - a newly styled 17 X 9.5 rim that sported the P275/40ZR-17 Goodyear Eagle GT. This new styling was also applied to the standard 16 x 8.5-inch rims.
The 1988 Corvette’s new high-performance tires called for a modified front suspension for improved directional control in hard braking. The thickness of the monster tires called for the "zero scrub radius", improving tire contact with the pavement throughout the braking action. The car’s rear suspension was also modified to improve overall straight-line and braking stability. Of course, the brake system was improved also, with the addition of two-piston front calipers and beefier rotors all the way around.
The handbrake for the 1988 Corvette was modified from previous years and moved slightly aft and lower in the door sill, with the goal of making less intrusive to the cockpit. An improved climate-control system, with increased airflow rates and automatic temperature control, was also offered.
